Beckhamâs knowing is tied to his physical existence. A property of that physical existence, spatially and temporally individuated. It is here rather than there, now rather than then, although a moment ago it may have been there rather than here when it was then rather than now. But the same is true of every spectator at the match. Every spectator can watch, or they can cover their eyes, or leave the stadium, or read the programme, or think about the beautiful person sitting next to them, or try to influence events with an extreme concentration of spurious will, and so on ad infinitum: the madness of consciousness. Apart from individuation all these positions of self-consciousness are exactly the same, apart from their histories. Someone might throw a bottle from the crowd and hit Beckham on the head. As a consequence he might lose his memory, no longer recognising Posh, no longer know he plays football, but as he questions, say, âwho is this skinny chav, who claims to know me ?â, he will know he questions. His history has gone but his awareness, of whatever he is aware of, is the same, because that is all it is, that property tied to a particular, and that is why it makes no sense to posit its existence apart from that particular. It is the awareness of awareness, of âbelonging to- that particular, and that is all. Without it Beckham could not be free. None of us could. Freedom requires stepping back. It is nothing magical, nothing sacred, not a god-given soul precious in all its rich uniqueness. It is very egalitarian, the same everywhere, and it is everywhere around us, wherever there are persons: self-reflexive agency, the grounds of equality and communism.
